Passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program is a crucial step in becoming a CNA in North Carolina. Because the state does not offer reciprocity or accepts endorsements, nurse aides from other states who wish to work there must also take the exam. The NNAAP exam was developed to test the competency of the nurse aide candidate in terms of skills and knowledge. They will have to pass all the tests to get into the Nurse Aide I Registry.

A CNAs name on the registry will remain on the list for only 2 years. To keep it on the list, the nurse aide must renew his license by submitting the renewal forms to the registry. The forms are sent along with a notice at least 2 to 3 months before the expiration date of the certification. The forms can also be downloaded by going to www.pearsonvue.com or to the NAR website. Renewal of certificates in the state is free.

On average, a nurse aide makes around $22,000 in a year. One can increase the chances to have a higher salary by becoming a certified medication aide. A CMA is a nurse aide who is trained to give the patients non-injectable medications such as patches, nasal sprays, and pills and tables.

Completing a state-approved training course is a necessary step in becoming a CMA. These courses take 24-hours to complete. After completing, the next step is to take the competency exam, which is also conducted by Pearson VUE. Unlike the CNA exams, the CMA competency exam consists only of a written exam that is given on an electronic testing system. Every candidate is given a maximum of 2 hours to answer all of the questions.

Since the exams are given electronically, the testers will be able to receive the results immediately. If the candidate passes, his name will be added to the Medication Aide Registry and his record on the NAR will be updated.

If you have any questions about your listing on the Registry you can contact the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulations during working hours at (919) 855-3969 or (919) 715-0562.
