The demand for nursing assistants in this state is high. Because of the rising demand, there are now many different educational facilities that are offering training. Such institutions are commonly colleges, high schools, health care centers, as well as vocational centers. To qualify you have to be physically capable to take care of patients to be enrolled in their programs. According to the state rules you must possess a high school diploma.
A nursing aide helps nurses and members of the medical team provide care to patients who are living in health care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living centers, and hospitals. They provide basic nursing care such as vital signs taking, cleaning the patient’s immediate environment, and assisting in activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, exercising, ambulating, and many more.
To ensure that the patients receive top quality care, all nursing aides are required to be certified before they can work in an approved health care facility. Receiving proper training is the first step in becoming a nursing aide. CNA programs will teach nursing aide candidates how to meet the demands and needs of each patient. Their training will consists of classroom instructions and supervised practical training in a nursing home or other health care settings.
Approved programs are required to be headed by a qualified instructor. An instructor is a registered nurse with at least 2 years of nursing experience. One of the most recent years must have been spent working in a long term care facility. The nurse must also have been able to complete 24 hours of continuing education courses in planning, implementing, and evaluation of nursing education programs.
A program can take a minimum of 150 hours to complete. There are also programs provided online. However, online courses must also offer instruction at a offline facility to cover the clinical portion of the curriculum. Online programs are only allowed to cover 24 hours of the hourly requirement. For more details about requirements of nursing assistant training in CA you can contact the Department of Public Health at (916) 327-2445.
Upon completing the program, the candidate will receive a certificate of completion and will become eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. Candidates can get an application packet at www.cdph.ca.gov or at www.pearsonvue.com.
The NNAAP exam is divided into two parts- the knowledge test and the skills evaluation exam. In order to get certified, a candidate must be able to pass all the tests. They are only given three attempts to pass. If a candidate fails to pass all the tests after the 3rd attempt, he will have to undergo retraining.
The results of the exams are normally released on the exam day. The names of those who passed will be forwarded to the Aide and Technician Certification Section. The ATCS will then send the CNA certificates to the address provided by each applicant. This certificate is only valid for 2 years and must be renewed before it expires. An expired certificate can no longer be renewed but can be reactivated by challenging a competency evaluation exam.
