The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in and finish a CNA training program. The program must be able to provide the prescribed curriculum and must be approved by the New Mexico Human Service Department. You must also pass a routine background check to see if you have any criminal records. After completing the program, you can then apply and take the nursing assistant license exams. After completion you when be added to the New Mexico State Nurse Aide Registry and become eligible to find work.

State-approved courses are required to offer a minimum of 75 hours of training. Training will consists of lectures, skills training, and practical application on what was learned in the controlled setting. During the duration of the training, the students will always be under the care of certified nursing aide clinical supervisors or a licensed practical nurse. The student will be taught on different concepts such as emergency care, resident’s rights, promoting safety and independence, emergency procedures, and how to assist in activities of daily living.

After the completion of the training, the next step is to apply for the exams. When applying, there will be a need to submit important documents along with the application forms. These documents include a certificate of proof that you had completed the proper training, fingerprint cards, SS cards, ID photo that was issued by the government, a negative result on the TB tests, and proof of your immunizations.

If the application was approved, the applicant will get the authorization to take the test. The exams are composed of a written and a skills evaluation exam. There are also oral examinations that are offered to those who have problems with reading English.  In the Prometric website, there is a downloadable reading assessment that an applicant can use if he is qualified to take the written exam; if not, then he can request to have an oral exam instead. During the skills evaluation tests, the nurse aide evaluators will also be scoring the candidates on indirect care behaviors which can include respecting the patient’s rights, promoting safety during care, and infection control for each procedure done.
