If you want to work as a CNA in the state of New Mexico you need to attend an approved certification training course. These courses must offer the proper curriculum and amount of hourly instruction to prepare you for the job. Upon completion of your classes you can apply to take the certification exams so you can be placed on the state Nurse Aide Registry.
Completing the New Mexico Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program is a requirement to get a CNA license. This test will determine if a nurse aide is competent enough in both skills and knowledge to take care of a patient. The state’s NACEP exams are given through Prometric, which is an independent testing company. There are certain things that must be followed during the exams, especially in the 2nd portion which is the skills evaluation.
Before starting the clinical skills tests, you will need to show the nurse aide evaluator an official government-issued ID upon entering the testing room. You will be asked to empty your pockets and give all your personal items to be stored in the testing room. You will also be given a card that contains the general instructions on taking the tests and the chance to ask for any clarifications on anything on the card.
Just when you are about to start the tests, you will be given another card that will contain the list of skills that you will be performing in front of the evaluator. Be sure to read the instructions for each skill carefully. When performing, you will be given a simple scenario and be told how much time you have to do each skill. Before you start, you will be given the time to check the supplies that may be needed in the performing of the skills. You may not however, collect the supplies until the start of the exams.
Examples of the nursing skills that will be asked to be performed include, but are not limited to:
• Grooming the patient
• Assisting in the use of a bedpan
• Feeding through the use of tubes
• Assisting in ambulation
• Skin care
• Proper positioning of the patient on the bed
• Promoting safety
• And some emergency procedures
The state of New Mexico is open to those that have finished their training in a different state. For these individuals to be able to work, they must apply for reciprocity. When applying they must still be an active CNA in the state they come from. They must also pass a background check to see if they have any criminal records. Also when applying, they are required to submit documents that prove their training and experience.
