Becoming a CNA in California is a quick way to enter the medical field and start gaining valuable experience. One great benefit of becoming certified is that training will not cost you that much. In addition you can frequently find facilities that will train you and offer a job immediately upon your certification.
A CNA certification is a requirement to work in California as a nurse aide. To get a CNA certificate, a candidate must pass the certification exam. The certification exam was designed to determine each candidate’s competency to work as a nurse aide in a certified nursing facility.
Candidates for the certification exams are required to successfully complete a training program that is certified by the CDPH. The best way to establish eligibility is to attend and complete a 150-hour NATP. Approved NATPs are headed by qualified instructors with backgrounds in teaching adults. Their curriculum is divided into 100 hours of supervised practice and 50 hours of classroom lectures. Students will learn how to properly take care of the different needs of each patient.
With most programs in the state you can finish your training within a maximum of 8 weeks. Unlike other states, there are a number of online courses that are honored by the state. You can select to complete some of your study online and the rest in a training facility. Once done with the training program, all that is left to do is to schedule a time to take the competency exams to get your certification.
Nursing students/graduates, registered nurses, and practical nurses are allowed to apply for the exam immediately. Military-trained medics who have been discharged must submit Form DD-214 when applying for the exam to the ATCS.
The certification exam consists of a knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Normally, the knowledge test is offered as a multiple-choice written exam but those with troubles in reading English can request to take an oral exam instead. If a candidate wishes to take the written exam, he must make the request when applying. Requests made on the day of the exam will not be granted.
Candidates are allowed to retake the exam twice in case they failed any portion of the exam the first time. If they continue to fail after the third attempt, they will be required to complete a 150-hour NATP before they can reapply.
Candidates who pass all the tests can expect their CNA certificate to arrive at their mailing address within 10 days after passing. Nurse aide certificates are made up of specialized stock paper with security features. The certificate must be kept current by renewing it every 2 years. A nurse aide will lose his eligibility to work as a CNA if his certificate expires.
An expired certificate can be reactivated by challenging and passing a competency evaluation exam. This is only allowed if the certificate has not expired for more than 2 years. If the certificate has been expired for more than 2 years, then the holder must undergo retraining and retesting.
