Before you are allowed to take care of people who need assistance as a nursing assistant, you must first undergo training in a CNA training program. Once you finish a state-approved training program, you can then apply for the license exams. You should apply for the exams within a year after you complete your training. Successful completion means your name is placed on the New Mexico State Nurse Aide Registry and eligible to work.
According to the OBRA of 1987, all nursing assistants must be certified if they wish to work in a long-term care facility. This will ensure that the patients will only receive top quality care. To help with this goal, training facilities that wish to give training must also be certified before they are allowed to take on any students. Training facilities may be a private vocational school, technical college, community training center, or even a high school.
Like becoming a nursing assistant, getting a certificate to offer nurse aide training also has its own set of requirements. For instance, a program must offer at least 75 hours of training to the students. These hours must include a minimum of 16 hours for practical skills training. The practical skills training will include training in either a laboratory or other settings.
During the entire course, the students will be supervised by either a certified registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. Aside from training them, they will ensure that the students do not perform or give nursing care services that were not taken up during training.
To become a CNA clinical supervisor, you must be a registered nurse with at least 2 years of experience, where at least 1 of those where spent working in a long-term care facility. The RN must have completed an adult education course or at least have experience in teaching them or supervising nursing assistants. The Director of Nursing in a facility-based program may also provide supervision to the students for a facility that is not allowed to do actual training.
There are also other health professions that may supplement in the training of the nursing assistants. These professionals must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in their field. Examples of such professions include nursing home administrators, therapists, nutritionists, social workers, dietitians, pharmacists, and specialists.
