If you plan on working as a nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota for long-term, you will need to get a certification. These certifications are given by the Department of Health through the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. In order to get one, your name must be entered in the Registry by complying with both the federal and state requirements.
In order to remain in the Registry, a nursing assistant must have worked in a licensed healthcare facility for at least 8 hours with pay, while under the supervision of an RN every 24 months. If you are working in a healthcare facility, other than those such as nursing homes or home health agencies, the facility will be required to submit your employment records and a your job description to the Registry. They will then review it and tell you whether or not it is enough for you to remain on the list.
A licensed facility may hire an individual who is not on the Registry as a nursing assistant; provided that that individual immediately enrolls in an approved training program and take the competency evaluations within 4 months from the start of his/her work. During that time, the facility will have to take liability of the individual and makes sure that he or she is performing the roles as a nursing assistant accordingly. After being certified and included on the registry database a nurse aide will need to work at least one, eight hour shift every tow years in order to comply with renewal regulations.
