The first step in becoming a nursing aide in California is to enroll in a certified nursing aide training course. An approved course will provide you with all the knowledge and skills that you need to take care of different patients. Because of the high demand for nursing aides in the state, you will have no trouble in looking for a suitable program. There are also some websites that offer free online training. When selecting a program, just make sure to enroll in one that is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health.
Training courses in this state take 150 hours to complete. You will be spending your time in the classroom for lectures and in the clinical area for your supervised practical training. Each course is headed by a registered nurse who is qualified to teach nursing aide students. Students will learn about different concepts such as infection control, mental health, vital signs, nutrition, human anatomy, medical terminology, and many more. Depending on what course you select, it can take you 8-24 weeks to complete your training.
After training, the next step is to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. This exam was created to test the competency of each nursing aide candidate to work in a CDPH-approved health care facility. It is divided into two parts –the 70-item multiple-choice written exam and the random practical skills test. Those who have difficulty in ready English can request to take an oral exam in conjunction with the written exam.
Candidates are only given 3 attempts to pass. Since your training is only valid for 2 years after completing your training, your 3 attempts are also only valid within that time. If you fail your 3rd attempt you will be required to complete another training program.
If you are a nursing student or graduate, you can immediately apply for the NNAAP exam without any need for further training. You just need to provide proof of education and training when you apply for the exam. This also applies to RNs, LPNs, and medics who wish to work as nursing aides.
To keep your eligibility to work you must renew your certification every 24 months. Two of the requirements for renewal is that you must find work for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing aide and complete 48 hours of in-service/CE. You must only take continuing education units from a CDPH-approved program. You will not be allowed to continue working once your certification expires.
