California is one of the best places to start working as a certified nursing aide. Because of the demand for nursing aides you will not have any difficulty looking for work. Like any other state, you must have a CNA certificate before you can start working in a state-approved nursing facility.
There are two general ways to get a nurse aide certificate in this state: by passing the certification exam or by applying for reciprocity. Unfortunately, the reciprocity is only offered to individuals who are already certified as nursing aides in other states. If they wish to apply they must have a current certification and a clean record. They must not have any accounts of patient abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of their properties.
The most common way of becoming a nursing aide is by enrolling in a state-approved CNA program and then take the NNAAP exam. To ensure that the training you will receive from the program you choose is good quality as well as ensure that you will be allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam afterwards you must only select a program that is approved by the California Department of Public Health.
Approved programs are guaranteed to offer no less than 150 hours of training. These hours are divided into lectures and supervised clinical practices, which are both taught at the same time. These programs are also required to teach 16 different modules that would cover nursing concepts such as nutrition, vital signs, infection control, long-term care patients, death and dying, communication skills, patients’ rights and independence, and many more.
Most programs take 2 to 6 months to complete. As soon as you are through you will be given an Initial Application from (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) that must be completed and submitted to the CDPH. Once the CDPH reviews your application and approves it, you will then be allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam.
The NNAAP exam is a two part examination that consists of a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. The written/oral exam will take 2 hours while the skills evaluation only 25 minutes. Both of these parts will be administered by Pearson VUE at approved testing centers throughout the state.
Candidates who will pass both tests will be given a certificate by the ATCS. This certificate will grant them eligibility to work in a state-approved testing center for 2 years. If they wish to remain eligible they must renew their certificate before it expires. To find out more about the renewal process, please follow this link: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/occupations/Documents/How-to-Renew-Your-Cert.pdf.
