Since the state of North Carolina does not offer reciprocity, the main way to get into the Nurse Aide Registry and get certified is by passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has contracted Pearson VUE to assist in the conducting, scoring, and releasing of the exam results.
For the first part of the exam, you will be allowed to choose between taking a written or oral exam. The written exam is available in either English or Spanish, and was made to help those with problems with written English. If you want to take the oral exam, you must request for one when you submit your application. Any request for special disability considerations must also be submitted during this time. For both tests, you will be given a total of 2 hours to answer all the questions. All of the items will be multiple-choice, including the second portion of the oral exam which will test your knowledge of common English words used by nursing aides in the care facilities.
The second part of the exam is the clinical skills test. In this part, you will be asked to perform 5 randomly selected nursing procedures in front of a nurse aide evaluator. The first of the nursing skills will always be how to perform proper hand washing. You will be doing this test in an area that will look similar to an actual clinical setting. Before the start of the exam, the evaluator will show you where the equipment is located. To pass this part, you must perform all the procedures/skills satisfactorily.
It is important that you arrive at the testing site at least 30-20 minutes before the actual scheduled time. Since the entire exam will take a long time, please plan your day properly. Late comers are no longer allowed to proceed and take the exams. In order to get into the Registry, you must pass both parts. You will only be given 3 attempts within 2 years from the completion of your training to get certified. When you re-take the exams, you will only need to take the ones you failed.
For more questions about the exams, you can download the candidate handbook at http://asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/073400.pdf, or call Pearson VUE customer service line at (888) 723-6773 or email them at: pearsonvuecustomerservice@pearson.com.
