student-demonstrationThe first step to becoming a nursing aide is to enroll in a state-approved nursing aide I training course. You will be spending a minimum of 75 hours in lectures and on-the-job training. These programs are offered by different institutions such as colleges, health care facilities, and even private companies. There are other ways of gaining eligibility to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam, but the advantage of completing a N.C. nursing aide I training program is that you will be allowed to work for 4 months as a nursing aide while waiting for you exam date.

The exams for this state are conducted by Pearson VUE. The exams consist of a written/oral part and a clinical skills evaluation. To get your CNA I certification, you must be able to pass all the tests. You are only given 2 years and three attempts to get certified. If you fail after the three attempts or exceeded your given 2 years, you will be required to undergo retraining. You can either complete another training program or enroll in a refresher course.

Getting a CNA I certificate will allow you to perform the tasks that are listed under the nursing aide I scope of duties. You will be allowed to do tasks involving personal care, body mechanics, safety procedures, nutrition, elimination, and do special procedures such as vital signs taking, application of warm and cold compress, and post-mortem care.

If you want to increase your scope of work and further your knowledge and skills as a nursing aide, you have the option to become a nursing aide II. If you are a nursing aide II, you will be allowed to assist in tasks involving oxygen therapy, sterile dressing change, wound irrigation, suctioning, tracheostomy care, advance nutritional activities, urinary catheter care, and even elimination procedures.

To get a CNA II certification, you will have to complete a Nursing aide II program, pass the competency exam, maintain a good record with the state and NAR, and have a valid CNA I certification. RNs and LPNs are also allowed to enroll in the training program. For more information on how to become a CNA II, please contact the N.C. Board of Nursing at (919) 782-7499.

In this part, you will be given 90 minutes to answer all the questions. The exam will have 60 multiple-choice questions where 10 of them will be pretest questions. These 10 will not be scored since they are placed there for statistical purposes. You topics will cover about the different roles of a nursing assistant, how to promote safety, and how to promote the resident’s function and health.

In the skills evaluation, a nurse aide evaluation will observe you as you perform 5 randomly selected nursing procedures.
