Enrolling in a CNA program is a major requirement in becoming a nursing aide. Since nursing aides have constant interaction of the patients/residents, all nursing aide candidates must learn how to properly meet the individual needs of the patients/residents. A training program will also help you prepare for the different situations that you may encounter once you become a certified nursing aide.
While enrolled in a program, you will be spending a minimum of 75 hours in the classroom for your theoretical course work and at least 16 hours in a certified nursing facility for your practical training. During the duration of the course, you and other students will be handled by a qualified nurse aide instructor. Before students are allowed to take care of a patient, they must first learn the following concepts:
– Medical and Surgical Asepsis
– Communication and Interpersonal Skills
– Basic Nursing Skills/Procedures
– Personal Care
– Medical Terminologies
– Roles and Responsibilities of a Nursing Aide
– Respecting the Patients’/Residents’ Rights
– Promoting the Patients’/Residents’ Independence

After you complete your training, the next step is to apply for the competency exams. Taking this exam shall be the last challenge, which you need to take to get into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry and become certified. Please remember that you only have one year, after completing your training, to get certified. Each candidate is given 3 attempts within the year to pass all the tests of the competency exam.
The competency exam is divided into two parts, which consists of a multiple-choice written exam and a random skills evaluation. Candidates will only be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry if they pass both tests. To help you prepare, you can visit www.kbn.ky.gov and download a copy of the Candidate Handbook. This handbook contains detailed information, tips, and sample exams, which you can take to get a better idea of what the competency exam is all about.
The state’s Board of Nursing shall renew a nursing aide’s certification once every 2 years. The nurse aide will be notified by the Board if his or her certification is up for renewal. To ensure that you’ll receive the notifications, a nursing aide must inform the Board if he or she changed name or address. You can inform the Board via https://ssla.state.ky.us/kbnursing/chgadd/NAR.aspx.
To qualify for recertification, you need to provide proof that you were able to work as a paid nursing aide for at least 8 hours. You will lose your eligibility to work in a certified nursing facility if you fail to renew your certification. An expired/lapsed certification can only be renewed by retaking the competency exam.
