Enrolling in a CNA program is a major requirement in becoming a nursing aide. Since nursing aides have constant interaction of the patients/residents, all nursing aide candidates must learn how to properly meet the individual needs of the patients/residents. A training program will also help you prepare for the different situations that you may encounter once you become a certified nursing aide.

nurse-trainee-with-instructorWhile enrolled in a program, you will be spending a minimum of 75 hours in the classroom for your theoretical course work and at least 16 hours in a certified nursing facility for your practical training. During the duration of the course, you and other students will be handled by a qualified nurse aide instructor. Before students are allowed to take care of a patient, they must first learn the following concepts:

–    Medical and Surgical Asepsis
–    Communication and Interpersonal Skills
–    Basic Nursing Skills/Procedures
–    Personal Care
–    Medical Terminologies
–    Roles and Responsibilities of a Nursing Aide
–    Respecting the Patients’/Residents’ Rights
–    Promoting the Patients’/Residents’ Independence

If you wish to get a complete list of all available programs in Kentucky, you may contact Vicki Barber at Kentucky Health Choices at (502) 564-6890.

After you complete your training, the next step is to apply for the competency exams. Taking this exam shall be the last challenge, which you need to take to get into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry and become certified. Please remember that you only have one year, after completing your training, to get certified. Each candidate is given 3 attempts within the year to pass all the tests of the competency exam.

The competency exam is divided into two parts, which consists of a multiple-choice written exam and a random skills evaluation. Candidates will only be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry if they pass both tests. To help you prepare, you can visit www.kbn.ky.gov and download a copy of the Candidate Handbook. This handbook contains detailed information, tips, and sample exams, which you can take to get a better idea of what the competency exam is all about.

The state’s Board of Nursing shall renew a nursing aide’s certification once every 2 years. The nurse aide will be notified by the Board if his or her certification is up for renewal. To ensure that you’ll receive the notifications, a nursing aide must inform the Board if he or she changed name or address. You can inform the Board via https://ssla.state.ky.us/kbnursing/chgadd/NAR.aspx.

To qualify for recertification, you need to provide proof that you were able to work as a paid nursing aide for at least 8 hours. You will lose your eligibility to work in a certified nursing facility if you fail to renew your certification. An expired/lapsed certification can only be renewed by retaking the competency exam.

The opportunities for certified nursing aides are scattered all across the United States. If you are looking for a place to become and work as a nursing aide, then why not think about Richmond, KY. So you want to become a nursing assistant? Well, the great thing about becoming one is that there are different routes that you can take to get a CNA certification. This certification is a necessary thing for employers will only accept individuals who have a valid nurse aide certification. This route is for individuals who have successfully completed a state-approved CNA program that consists of a minimum of 75 hours of lectures and supervised clinical practice. Candidates who already took the NNAAP exam but failed can retake the exam by applying through this route. Applicants are required to show proof of their education and training when submitting the application form.  They are also asked to indicate if it’s their first time to take the NNAAP exam or not.

Certification as a Nursing Student

Nursing students who are currently enrolled in a nursing program or have completed at least one full semester of the Fundamentals of Nursing are allowed to apply. Applicants must also provide proof that they completed at least 40 hours of providing nursing care while enrolled in a program.

Nursing Graduate

Since nursing graduates received similar training to the training offered in a CNA program, they are also welcome to take the NNAAP exam if they wish to pursue this line of work. A lot of nursing graduates are currently doing this because of the great demand for nursing assistants throughout the United States.

Lapsed Certificate Holder

CNA certifications in this state are only valid for 2 years. To keep one’s eligibility, a worker must renew his or her certification before it expires. If they fail to renew on time, the state has allowed a 90 day grace period. If the holder still fails to meet the requirements or renew within that time, then his certification will expire and he must take the NNAAP exam to reactivate it.

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination

The NNAAP exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. The state has asked Pearson VUE to help conduct, score, and release the exam results. Only candidates who are able to pass both tests within a year after applying or within 3 attempts are given a certificate issued by the state’s Board of Nursing.

The main goal in the process of becoming a nursing aide in California is to get certified. According to the law, only certified workers are allowed to work in this occupation in a hospital, or nursing facility. A nursing aide can only be certified if his name is entered in the NAR. In this state the Aide and Technician Certification Section on the L&C is responsible for certifying CNAs and HHAs.

conference-for-college-studentsIf you have never been certified before as a nursing aide, then you will have to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam to get certified. The NNAAP exam is only available to those who have received the necessary training. The best way to establish eligibility is to complete a CDPH-approved 150-hour CNA training program. When enrolled, you will learn the knowledge and skills needed when you take care of a patient as a nursing aide. Depending on which program you choose to enroll in, it can take you an average of 4-6 months to complete your training.

Once done, you will be ready to fill out the application form and send it to the ATCS. The exams are currently handled by Pearson VUE. You can download a copy of the application packet by going to their official website at www.pearsonvue.com. You may also apply directly through their website. If you do so, you will have to pay with the use of your MasterCard of Visa.

To get into the NAR, you must pass the knowledge test and the skills evaluation. Each candidate will only be given 3 attempts to pass. These attempts must also be used within 2 years of completing one’s training. If you fail to pass the tests after three attempts, you will be required to undergo retraining before you can reapply.
