Before you can take care of patients and their families, you must first gain the skills and knowledge in handling them. You can get these skills when you enroll in a certified nursing assistant training class. There, you will learn the basic nursing skills, learn health care procedures, and gain experience that is needed when handling a patient.
Once you have completed a class you can schedule a time for the examination. The exam is administered by a company called Pearson Vue. They provide a study guide and practice test for you to use at: http://www.asisvcs.com/indhome_fs.asp?CPCAT=0624NURSE You can contact them about scheduling an exam reservation by calling 1-800-274-0504. When you take the exam you will need to pass both parts, which are a manual test and a written test.
After passing applicants become certified to work and are added to the online registry database signifying they are licensed in the state. Employers can then check the potential employees status to ensure they are eligible to work. Once certified your status is good for 24 months and will need to be renewed for you to be able to continue working. Work verification is currently required that shows you put in at least 8 hours in the capacity of a nurse aide.
CNA license holders from different states may apply for work in Minnesota if they wish to do so. All they have to do is to fill out an Interstate Endorsement Forms. You can download a copy of the forms at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fpc/profinfo/narinfo/Interstate2.pdf. The PDF will already include the necessary instructions that you will simply need to follow.
Section A-1 will need to be completed and sent to the NAR that you are currently registered to. You will only send both sections A-1 and A-2 to the Minnesota NAR if you are a CNA that is transferring from California, North Carolina, Colorado, Illinois, or Missouri. Section B-1 will be sent to your last or current employer of the state you are currently registered to. You will not send it to an MN employer.
Please allow at least 30 working days for your application to be processed. Keep in mind that there are no processing fees to get into the MN Registry. You will need to fill out the forms carefully to avoid any mistakes. Incomplete applications can further delay your processing.
