You must successfully complete a state-approved Nursing Aide Training Program or NATP to become a nursing aide. You must meet a certain number of requirements to enroll in a program. Nursing aide training consists of classroom lectures and supervised hands-on training. Both parts of the training programs are done at the same time. All training programs are required to offer a minimum of 80 hours of instructions. While in the clinical area, students must be under the constant supervision of a CNA instructor. No student may perform any procedure nor demonstrate any nursing skill without the knowledge or presence of the instructor.

After you complete your training, you will have 24 months to apply and pass the NNAAP exams to get your license. Federal and State laws require all long-term nursing aides to have licenses. The NNAAP exam consists of a 2-hour written test and a 30-minute manual skills demonstration. Both tests are taken on the same day at a Regional Testing Site or a certified training facility. Each candidate is given a maximum of three attempts to pass.
