CNA training is crucial to becoming a certified nursing assistant. You need to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to take care of the patients so that they will only receive quality care from their health care providers. Completing a training program is also necessary to apply for the NNAAP Exam, which is the final step in becoming certified and eligible to work.

You can get the training that you need from health care institutions and training facilities throughout the state. Their training programs are closely monitored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to ensure that students will get the education and training that they deserve. Training programs are required to last at least 80 hours of training. These hours are divided into 42.5 hours of theories and 37.5 hours of supervised clinical practice. It can take 3 to 4 months to complete a program depending on its schedule.

A person who is already working, as a health care provider in a Medicaid/Medicare nursing facility may not be charged for training and testing costs. The employing nursing facility is responsible for full training and testing payments. A person who has not yet received any work upon enrolling in a program can still get reimbursed if he is able to find work within 12 months after getting certified. The first half of the costs will be paid once a nursing assistant has worked 130 hours; the other half will be paid upon reaching another 130 hours of working in the occupation.

Before you enroll in a CNA training program you will want to ensure it is approved by the state. Courses will teach you state and federally mandated theoretical health care procedures as well as provide hands-on practice in a nursing environment. Inclusion in the registry is possible after you meet all of the requirements of certification. Currently you will need to submit a completed application, TB test, immunization records, consent to a physical exam, consent to a background check, take a state approved training course, and pass the license examinations.

Upon completion of your training, you will be allowed to apply for the NNAAP exams. The exams are scheduled by the American Red Cross and are conducted with the help of Pearson VUE. The application form will have detailed instructions on what to do and where to send the forms. You can contact the ARC with the number provided if you have any trouble completing the forms or if you have any concerns. All first-time applicants must include the payment of $102 for both parts of the NNAAP exams.

The first part of the exam is the written test. This is a two hour examination that consists of 70 multiple-choice questions. The written test can be replaced by an oral exam if a candidate has trouble reading. The second part of the examination is the manual skills demonstration. In this part, candidates are given 30 minutes to perform 5 randomly selected nursing procedures in front of a CNA Evaluator. They must perform all procedures satisfactorily to pass the 2nd part of the exams.

If a candidate is able to pass both tests, then his or her name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. The score reports are sent back on the same day of the exams if there are no technical problems. A Registration Card will then be sent within three (3) weeks after passing to the candidate’s mailing address. Once a nursing assistant’s name is on the registry, he or she will be allowed to work in a federal nursing facility as a full-time CNA for two years.
