If you want to work as a nursing aide in Tennessee, you will have to gain entry into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. This registry contains information regarding all nursing aides who have met the training and testing requirements of both the federal and the state. You can only work in a certified nursing facility in this state if you are on the NAR.

nurse-students-at-class-lectureBefore one can apply for the exams, they must meet some requirements like completing a CNA training program and going through a state and federal background check. Classes are required to teach fundamental nursing skills in 25 different categories. Instruction is administered by a registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years of work experience. During your instruction you will get both hands-on skills training and classroom coursework. Once you have finished your school requirement you can apply to take the competency exam. The exam will test you on 5 of the skills you learned during your CNA training.

The most common way to get into the NAR is by challenging the competency examination. The Department of Health has authorized D&S Diversified Technologies to help conduct, score, and release the results of the exam. All those who wish to apply for the exams will have to submit their application forms (http://www.hdmaster.com/testing/cnatesting/tennessee/tnformpages/tnforms/1101TN.pdf) and payment to D&S DT.

The first part of the exam is the knowledge skills test. Candidates will be given 90 minutes to answer all 75 multiple-choice questions. In order to pass this exam, the candidate must get at least 75% average. The questions for the exams will be taken from different topics such as safety, infection control, basic nursing skills, roles and responsibilities, disease process, aging process, personal care, mental health, and many more.

The second part of the exam is the practical skills test. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the candidate’s performance of different nursing assistant care tasks that were taught during training. Each candidate will be given a 30 minutes to perform 5 different nursing skills in front of an evaluator. Hand washing is one of the tasks that call candidates must perform. The rest of the 4 remaining tasks will be randomly selected from a set list of nursing skills and procedures. To pass this test, candidates must perform all the skills with a 80 % competence and without missing any important steps.

With the new D&S DT system, the competency exam may now be taken online through WebETest. Although offered in many testing sites, there are some sites where this testing option is not available. In online testing, candidates will have to answer all the questions on a computer. Using the same method, the observers will also use a computer to evaluate the candidates for their skills exam.

To gain entry into the NAR, you will be required to pass all the tests. Once your name is entered, you can expect your certification to arrive in your mail within 4-6 weeks after you passed. You must renew your certification every 24 months to keep your name on the NAR and eligibility to work as a nursing assistant. Currently the requirement for renewal is that you work an 8 hour shift in the capacity of a nursing assistant for each 2 year period and show verification to the registry. For more information regarding the exam, please visit the D&S DT official website at www.hdmaster.com or call (877) 201-0758.
