If you want to become a nursing assistant, you will need to comply with both the state and the federal government’s requirements. Basically, what you have to do in order to be allowed to work in a healthcare facility as a nursing assistant is to get your name entered in the Nurse Aide Registry. There are different ways to do this.
The first step in becoming a nursing aide in the state of Minnesota is to choose a nursing assistant program that you are going to enroll in. In the program, you will be spending several hours on lectures about different topics such as basic care, communication, grooming, and learn the health care procedures required. Once done, you will be tested in the state exams. If you pass the state exams, you will then become a certified nursing assistant.
If you have previously completed training in a state-certified program you may be able to challenge the competency evaluations. If you are already working as a nursing assistant in a licensed facility, then you will have to do this within 4 months. If you challenge the exams directly, then you will not be given the normal 4 months.
Another way of getting your name entered is if you fill out the Interstate Endorsement Forms. This way is only applicable for those who already have a CNA license but is currently working in a different state. When applying for reciprocity, you may have to wait for 30 business days for the completion of its processing. This can be further delayed by any discrepancies that are found on your applications.
