Before you are able to take care of the patients and their families, you must first be equipped with the skills that are needed. The only way for you to do that is if you enroll in a nursing assistant training class that is state-approved.
During instruction you will spend hours lecturing on different health care subjects and learn the basic nursing skills needed on the job. You will also receive clinical practice using the tools and performing the procedures necessary. Some of the tasks you will practice include: range of motion exercises, transferring residents with a transfer belt, measuring vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature), catheter care, housekeeping, infection control, safety procedures, feeding, dressing, bathing, grooming, handwashing, and restorative care.
Once done, you can test your knowledge and skills by applying for the state examinations. You can contact them via email at health.FPC-NAR@state.mn.us, or call them at (651) 215-8705 or toll free at 1-800-397-6124, with any questions you have regarding licensure/certification.
The state realizes the need for nursing assistants is continuing to increase. That is why they are very open to CNAs from other states who want to work in Minnesota. For them to apply for reciprocity, they will only need to fill out the Interstate Endorsement forms which they can download at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fpc/profinfo/narinfo/Interstate2.pdf.
When filling it out, the candidate must make sure that there are no mistakes. The normal processing time for these will take up to 30 working days. The processing can be further delayed if there are anomalies in the application forms because they will be sent back to the applicant. The PDF file on the link provided here already contains the necessary instructions in processing; the applicant just needs to follow them completely. To further hasten the transferring of files, the state now has a system that allows the applicant to upload the forms directly to the Minnesota NA Registry. If you have any problems with the processing, you can call the Registry during working hours at (651) 215-8705.
