The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to look for a state-approved training program. CNA programs are offered by different institutions like community colleges, nursing homes and hospitals, technical colleges, vocational training institutions, and many more. Approved training programs in South Carolina take a minimum of 100 hours to complete.

This exam will test you in terms for knowledge and skill and will evaluate whether you are capable of working as a certified nursing assistant. To be certified, you must get your name on the Nurse Aide Registry, which means you must pass both the written/oral exam and the skills return demonstration.

If you feel that you are not yet ready to take the exam, you may postpone up to a maximum of 2 years. Each candidate is given three attempts to pass all the tests. If you fail in one exam, you will need to reapply and retake the exam that you failed. If you fail to get certified within 2 years of completing your training or within 3 attempts, you will have to undergo retraining before you can apply for the exams again.

If you pass the exams, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. Pearson VUE will then send your CNA card and wallet ID card to your mailing address within 10 working days. Your name on the Registry will remain for 24 months. If you wish to continue your eligibility to work as a nursing aide, you must renew your certification before it expires. To be eligible for renewal, you must have worked for 8 hours as a paid nursing aide.

If your certification expires, you will no longer be allowed to work. An expired certification cannot be renewed. If you wish to work again as a nursing aide, you will have to undergo retraining and retesting. For more information, you can call Pearson VUE at (800) 475-8290.
