The first step to be a nursing aide in Minnesota is to enroll in one of the programs that are listed above. You have to make sure that the program that you are planning to enroll in is approved by the state that you are in. To complete the CNA classes, you must meet the set of minimum hours required by the state. You will spend hours on lectures and skills training while under the supervision of a registered nurse. After completion students are allowed to apply for the license examination.
There is a written test and an ability demonstration test you must pass to become certified to work. After you pass all the exams in the license exams, your name will be entered on the NA Registry. Once it is there, you will need to maintain that status to continue to work as a nursing aide at a nursing facility. To remain on the Registry you will have to work at least 8 hours as a paid nursing aide every 2 years. Your tasks during that time must be similar to those that are performed in a nursing home. Orientation and training are not considered as valid hours.
If you work in a healthcare facility, aside from a certified nursing home or a home health agency, you will need to contact the Registry to see if your employment will qualify you to remain listed there. Your employing facility must send to the Registry an update form as well as a job description of what you do. If you have any important detail changes, such as your name or living address, you must immediately inform the Registry. You will need to fill out an Update form and send it along with your social security number. You can download a copy of the form at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fpc/profinfo/narinfo/24moupdate2.pdf. You can also speak with a customer support associate between the hours of 9:00 AM, and 3:00 PM., Monday thru Friday. by calling toll free at 1-800-397-6124, or locally at (651) 215-8705.
