Nursing assistance is one of the most in demand jobs in the health care system today. One reason for its high demand is the continuous increase in the aging population and the number of people who need assistance with their daily lives. As a nursing aide, you will be taking care of patients with the use of basic nursing skills. When you work, you will be under the supervision of a registered nurse.
The most important thing you need to have to work as a round-the-clock nursing assistant in Pennsylvania is a CNA license. Having a license will prove to employers that you met the federal and state requirements to be certified. Here’s some need-to-know information on becoming a CNA in this state.
Background Checks
Criminal background checks in this state are done before anything else. Criminal background check results are required in order to be accepted into a certified training program. However, unlike some states, one does not necessarily have to undergo both federal and state checks. Only the applicants who have not been living in Pennsylvania within the last 24 consecutive months are required to get both FBI and Pennsylvania State Background Checks.
CNA Training Programs
Nursing assistant programs are monitored and approved by the state’s Department of Education. They are required to offer their students a minimum of 80 hours of instructions, of which 37.5 hours must be allocated for supervised clinical practice. The remaining hours may be spent on classroom and laboratory instructions. Most programs can take 12 to 16 weeks of continuous training to finish.
Some of the skills you will learn include nursing theory, patient hygiene, infection control, feeding & nutrition, measuring vital signs, sub acute care, resident rights, restorative care, postmortem care, catheter care, and range of motion exercises.
CNA Exams
The exams in this state are conducted by the American Red Cross with the help of Pearson VUE. This two part examination consists of a 2-hour written/oral test and a 30-minute skills demonstration. Applicants must pass both parts within 24 months to get certified. Each applicant is given a maximum of 3 attempts to pass. If they fail to pass within the 24 month period or use up all their attempts, then he or she must undergo retraining.
Applications must be sent to:
American Red Cross
Competency Evaluation Program
1804 North 6th Street,
Harrisburg, PA 17102
First-time takers must send $102 along with the application forms for the testing fees. The payment must only be in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check made payable to the ARC. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
For questions regarding testing locations call the American Red Cross at 1-800-795-2350. Test sites are administered at a variety of locations including vocational schools, nursing homes, health facilities, and some American Red Cross facilities.
Rescheduling
All payments are permanent and non-refundable. If for any reason you are unable to attend the exams on your given date, you need to inform the American Red Cross no less than 3 business days before your scheduled date. If you inform them on time, you will be allowed to reschedule for no extra charge.
Reimbursement
Applicants who are employees of a long-term care nursing facility prior to enrolling in a training program may not be charged for any training and testing fees. The employing health care facility is responsible for paying all costs.
An applicant who was not employed upon the start of training, but was able to get employed within 12 months after getting certified may qualify for reimbursement. Half of the costs of training and testing will be paid to the CNA when he or she has worked for 130 hours. The other half will be paid upon completion of another 130 working hours.
You may contact the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare at (717) 783-7377 to know more about reimbursement.
Reciprocity
A CNA from another state can directly apply for entry into the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry if he or she has a current license and a clean record. Applicants must not be listed on the Nurse Aide Registry. Out-of-state applicants should contact the state’s Department of Health through Pearson VUE at (800) 852-0518.
