CNA training programs are found throughout California. Completing a program that is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health is one of the best ways to become qualified to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. All aspiring nursing aides are required to take and pass the NNAAP exam.
Nursing assistant programs in California take 150 hours to complete. The hours are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of clinical practice, which are both taught at the same time. All programs are required to be headed by a qualified instructor and teach 16 different modules that will cover different topics that will help aspirants become competent nursing aides. You can contact the Training Program Review Unit to learn if a school meets state standards at (916) 552-8873.
Prior to the start of the clinical rotation of the training, students will first spend 16 hours learning about infection control, safety and emergency procedures, communication and interpersonal skills, and patients’ rights and independence.
Completing a CNA program is not the only way to become qualified for the NNAAP exam. Taking units on the Fundamentals of Nursing or gaining military training as a medic can also make a person qualified to apply for the NNAAP exams. To ensure that they are eligible, they are advised to call the ATCS at (916) 327-2445.
The NNAAP exam was developed to test the competency in both skill and knowledge of all aspiring nursing aides. It is a two part exam which consists of a 70-item written/oral test and a random skills evaluation. Aspirants must pass both parts within 2 years after completing their training in order to get certified.
The Aide and Technician Certification Section is responsible for issuing CNA certificates to those who will pass the NNAAP exam. If you are able to pass all the tests, the ATCS will send you your certificate within 10 days after passing. This certificate will prove that you are a certified nursing aide in the state of California.
Employers will only hire CNAs who are certified by the ATCS. Before hiring any applicant, they will first confirm the applicant’s certification by calling the ATCS or visiting http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx.
