Becoming a nursing assistant in the state of Minnesota is not so difficult. All you have to do is to enroll in a state-approved nursing assistant training program and take the state exams to get your license.
A licensed healthcare facility may hire an individual as a nursing assistant even if he is not on the Registry. The government will allow this only if the individual immediately enrolls in an approved training program and then challenge the competency evaluation exams afterwards. All of this must be done within 4 months from the start of his work. In order to complete a training program, you will only need to complete the 75 hours of training and do the necessary coursework.
If an individual was hired by a healthcare facility prior to enrolling in a training program, the individual may not be charged with any of the training expenses. All the costs must be directed to the hiring facility. Since the costs of training vary from one program to another, it is advised that the facility call the training program to verify their costs.
Individuals who completed a training program before they got hired by a healthcare facility may still get reimbursed for their costs. To do so, they must be able to submit all the receipts from the training within 1 year from them taking the exams. The nursing assistant must have also worked for at least 90 days in the facility to be eligible for reimbursement.
After your training you will want to send in an application for the license examination. The exams are given by the Pearson Vue testing company and are made up of two different parts. These are a manual demonstration and a multiple choice test. Applicants need to pass both portions in order to become certified. After taking the tests and passing your name is added to the state registry. Potential employers can check the registry to ensure you have an active status before hiring.
Your status will need to be renewed each 24 month period and the registry will send you notification several months prior to this renewal date. You can contact the Minnesota Department of Health through their email at: health.FPC-NAR@state.mn.us or customer support line at (651) 215-8705 or toll free at 1-800-397-6124.
Certified nurse aides from other states are allowed to apply for reciprocity to be able to work in MN. To qualify they must submit an Interstate Endorsement Forms to transfer their certificate. If you meet the qualifications and have an active license from the state you come from the Nursing Assistant Registry may grant your request.
