A healthcare facility is allowed to hire an individual to work as a nursing aide provided that the individual immediately enrolls in a CNA course and takes the competency evaluation exams within 4 months from the start of work. During that time, the facility has to ensure that the individual is competent enough to handle the tasks of a nursing aide.
According to the law, if an individual enrolls in a training course after being hired as a nursing aide by a facility, that individual will not be charged for the costs of the training. All the costs will be directly billed to the hiring facility. It is important that employer call the training facility to verify the costs of the training since not all are the same.
The examination has two parts which are a written and a physical skills test. The written part is multiple choice and has seventy questions which you will have 2 hours to finish. For the physical exam you will need to demonstrate how to perform five of the tasks used on the job on a live participant in a clinical setting. You must pass both to qualify for certification. Pearson Vue handles the administration of the tests and can be reached for inquires about test materials, locations and reservations by calling 1-800-274-0504.
Once the individual becomes licensed, they will receive a certificate. If one wants to acquire a duplicate, he will have to contact Pearson Vue. The request will only be possible if it was done within 2 years from passing the exams.
