One of the best ways to start a career in health care is to become a certified nurse aide. Compared to other career choices, you can become a CNA in a matter of a few weeks at a fraction of the cost of what it may cost you to become a nurse or a licensed vocational nurse. In addition to being well in demand throughout the country, nurse aides in California also receive some of the highest salaries, earning an average of $27,000 annually.
The first step in becoming a nurse aide is to receive the proper education and training. To ensure that your training will meet the standards of both the federal and state, you must only enroll in a program that is approved by the California Department of Health. Approved programs are required to offer no less than 150 hours of training and cover 16 different modules. Their curriculum is divided into theories and practical training. You will learn different concepts like:
• Infection Control
• Nutrition
• Mental Health
• Personal and Basic Nursing Skills
• Communication Techniques and Interpersonal Skills
• Safety and Emergency Procedures
• Vital Signs
• Weight and Measurements
By completing an approved program, you will gain eligibility to apply for the NNAAP examination. This exam consists of a knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam that are given on the same day. Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing students/graduates, and military-trained medics can also apply for the exams by providing, along with the application forms, proof of their education and training to:

If you pass both portions of the NNAAP exams the ATCS will send you your CNA certificate within a few days after you pass. A CNA certificate is a major requirement to work as a nurse aide in California. This certificate is valid for only 24 months and must be renewed before it expires to keep one’s eligibility to work as a nurse aide.
If you are a certified nurse aide in another state, you can get an ATCS-issued CNA certificate by applying for reciprocity. To be eligible you must have a clean record and a current certification in the state(s) you are registered in. A nurse aide who is on the Abuse Registry will not be allowed to work in a CDPH-approved nursing facility. Reciprocity applicants are also required to pass the national background check for criminal records.
