The lectures and clinical practice are taught concurrently (at the same time). As a nursing assistant your training will be composed of theoretical lessons as well as hands-on training. The 40 hours are divided equally into 20 hours of classroom lesson and 20 hours of practical training.
After you complete your training, you will become eligible to apply for the state license exam. The examination will have a written and a skills demonstration portion. If you wish, the written examination can be replaced by an oral exam. The license exam will cover all the lessons that were taught to you in the training program. As for the skills demonstration, only a few of the basic nursing skills will be asked to be performed.
If you pass the NNAAP exam you will receive a certificate and get your name entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. If you fail to renew, and let your certification expire you will no longer be allowed to continue working as a nurse aide in a nursing facility.
