According to the OBRA of 1987, all nurse aides who work in a license long-term care facility or a licensed sub-acute unity must be certified. This Act requires all nursing assistants to undergo proper training by enrolling in a state-approved training program. By gaining proper knowledge and skills, their patients will be able to receive only top quality care from them.
The certification process ends by passing the written exam and the skills evaluation and getting your name entered on the Nurse Aide Registry. There are also some cases where the written exams are replaced by oral exams. This is for those who have problems with reading English. The competency exams for the state of New Jersey are taken care by PSI. It is also the work for the PSI to maintain the state’s Nurse Aide Registry and the state’s Nurse Aide Abuse Registry.
For any problems with the competency exams or a nursing assistant who is believed to have committed any abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of a patient’s property, you can report it to the PSI by faxing them at (609) 633-9087 or sending them an E-mail at ltc@doh.state.nj.us. Nurse aide licenses that were suspended or revoked may no longer be renewed.
CNA certifications in the state of New Jersey are only valid for 24 consecutive months and must be renewed before it expires. Each time an individual renews his license, the Department of health requires them to undergo a criminal background check. You will receive a notice 4 months prior to the expiration of your license.
If you are a nursing assistant that comes from a different state, you can still work in New Jersey if you want to. All you have to do is to apply for reciprocity. When applying, you will undergo a routine background check of the state and federal level. You will also need to submit documents that show your experience and training. When applying you have to make sure that you are still and active CNA from the state you come from.
