The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program is an examination that was created to check the competency of the nurse aide candidate to take care of the patients. The NNAAP was developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Inc. test both the knowledge and skills of the candidate. To help administer and score the exams, NCSBN made a contract with Pearson Vue.
The NNAAP examinations consist of two parts, which are given on the same date at approved testing sites only. These sites may either be a regional testing site or a training class that was approved to conduct in-facility training.
The first part of the exams is the written exam, which consists of 70 multiple choice questions. An oral exam may also be taking instead of the written exam. The oral exam may be in English or in Spanish. The oral exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and 10 questions about reading comprehension, which are also answered with multiple-choice.
The second portion of the exams is the skills evaluation. In this part, the candidate will be required to perform 5 randomly chosen nurse aide skills. All the skills must be performed within 30 minutes in front of a nurse aide evaluator. In order to pass this portion, all the skills must be performed satisfactorily.
A list of the nursing skills, as well as sample questions for the written exams and a reading assessment to determine if you are competent to take the written exam can be seen on the Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook. The handbook can be downloaded from this link: http://asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/073400.pdf. You will notice on the PDF downloadable file that there are two versions of the handbook. The second version is to be read by those who are planning to take the exams on or after July 1, 2013, since the NNAAP had added something new to the new tests.
