The end goal of becoming a nursing assistant in Pennsylvania is to get put on the Pennsylvania State Nurse Aide Registry. The only way you can get there is by passing the state competency exams after completing a CNA training program that’s approved by the state’s Department of Education, as well as clearing the mandatory background checks.

nurse-aide-awardBefore you can take care of the patients you must know all the skills needed. These skills and knowledge include the basic nursing skills, and emergency procedures you need to know while on the job. By enrolling in a nurse aide program you will get classroom training and practical clinical skills practice. During your instruction you will learn primary skills such as: range of motion exercises, measuring vital signs, housekeeping, infection control, safety procedures, nourishment, transporting patients, toileting, catheter care, bathing and dressing residents.  All of these will be taught to you when you enroll in classes that has been approved by the state of Pennsylvania.

Once you have finished your instruction you will want to find a testing location to take the certification exams. To find a place to take the test you can contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-795-2350. There are two parts of the CNA competency exam – a practical skills demonstration and a written examination. All aspiring nursing assistants must pass both these tests within 2 years after completing their training to be listed on the Nurse Aide Registry.

In the skills examination, applicants will be asked to perform five (5) randomly selected nurse aide skills in front of a CNA Evaluator. The first of the skills will always be proper hand washing. You can find the complete list of nursing skills that might be required to be performed on your exam day on your Candidate Handbook. The written exams consist of 70 multiple-choice questions that are written in English.  Applicants are given 2 hours to answer the written exam and 30 minutes to perform all required nursing skills.

An oral exam may be substituted for the written exams if the applicant has trouble reading English or just simply prefer to take this type of exam. Those who wish to take this exam must indicate their choice of testing method upon completing the application form for the exams. If you are uncertain which type of knowledge test to take, follow this link for a Self-Assessment Reading Test: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/nurse_aide_registry/14154/nurse_aide_self_assessment_reading_test/558493. A reading test can also be found in your handbook, as well as sample tests.

First-time takers are required to pay $102 for both tests, which must be in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check. Personal checks, cash, or credit cards are not accepted. All requirements for application must be placed in one envelope and sent to:

American Red Cross
Competency Evaluation Exam
1804 North 6th Street,
Harrisburg, PA 17102

Applicants who are employed by a certified long-term care facility are not allowed to pay for their training and testing fees. All payments must be handled by their employers. Newly certified nurse aides who can find work within one year after getting certified can get reimbursement on a pro-rated basis once they met the requirements. You can get more information about this by calling the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

A nurse aide who is currently listed on another state’s Nurse Aide Registry and is in good standing, and is looking for work in Pennsylvania can work as a CNA without undergoing further training and testing by applying for reciprocity. Those who are interested are required to call the PA-NAR at (800) 852-0518 to determine if they are eligible.
