The completion of the NNAAP examination is the only way to get into the Nurse Aide I Registry. Only those individuals who are on the registry are allowed to work in a long-term care facility. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Service has contracted Pearson VUE to assist in conducting, scoring, and releasing of the results of the exam.
The exam consists of a written/oral portion and a skills evaluation test. To get into the NAR, you must pass all the tests. Once you do, your name will automatically be entered into the registry. Your record in the Registry will not only contain your name and license number, but other personal information. It will be your responsibility to keep your record in the registry updated. If your record in the registry is out of date, it may result in a delay in your renewal notice. You can update your profile by:
• Completing a Name/Address Change Reporting form by downloading it. (http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dhsr/hcpr/pdf/nar_coaf.pdf).
• Calling the NAR- which is only for a change in mailing address
• Writing to the registry at:

In order to keep your eligibility to work, you must renew your license before it expires. The registry will send you a notice for your renewal at least 3 months before the expiration date. There is no renewal fee for your CNA and CMA license. To be eligible for renewal, you must have worked for at least 8 hours within the last 24 months.
For your work to be considered qualified, it must be done for monetary compensation; the work you did must fall under the scope of work for a nursing aide; and during work, you must be under the supervision of a registered nurse.
