Looking for a long-lasting career? Why don’t you try to think about starting a career as a nursing assistant in Pennsylvania? For an investment of around $500 to $2000, you could be making $20,000 to $30,000 yearly as a certified CNA. Compared to other careers, you won’t have to spend years in training before you get to make that much. So, what are you waiting for? Here’s how you can become a nursing assistant!
Criminal background checks are a requirement for all aspiring nursing assistants. These checks will protect the patients from any unsavory characters who have records of abuse, theft, or other similar cases. If you have been a resident of Pennsylvania within the last 2 years, then you’ll only be required to get state-level checks. Out-of-state residents are required to get federal and state background checks.
Once you are clear, your next step is to enroll in a certified training program. One of the best ways you can learn how to be a nursing assistant is by enrolling in a CNA class. Each training school will have different requirements for enrollment; one of them will be the background check results. You’ll also be required to undergo physical exams to determine if you are in top shape and if you have any communicable diseases.
Nursing assistant students will spend their time in the classroom learning about important nursing concepts and in a certified nursing facility practicing the different nursing skills they have learned in the classroom. Students will learn about medical terms, vital signs taking, infection control, safety and emergency care, human anatomy, assisting in activities of daily living, and other related skills and concepts. Courses must be approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to qualify one for the license examinations.
You’ll be allowed to apply for the CNA exams after you complete your training. You are allowed 24 months to complete the exams from the time you finished you school requirement. This exam consists of a multiple-choice written test and a clinical skills test. The testing fee for first-time takers is $102, which must be in the form of a money order or cashier’s check. You can get the application forms by visiting www.pearsonvue.com. All application forms and requirements must be placed in one envelope and sent to:
American Red Cross
Competency Evaluation Program
1808 North Sixth St.,
Harrisburg, PA 17102
Arrive at the testing area at least 30 minutes before the scheduled exams. Latecomers are not allowed to enter the testing area once the exams have begun. You’ll need to memorize your social security number and bring two identification cards for the pre-exam check-in. Also, don’t forget to bring a watch with a second hand for the skills exam; some procedures might require you to take note of the time.
You can better prepare for the exam by getting more information about it. Request a copy of the CNA Candidate Handbook by calling the American Red Cross at (800) 795-2350 or by downloading a copy from www.pearsonvue.com. To get more details about the certification requirements for nursing assistants you can contact Pearson VUE at 1-800-852-0518.
The exam results are released on the same day if there are no technical problems. Once your name is on the NAR, you can start working as a full-time nursing assistant. Your certification card will arrive in the mail within 3 weeks after passing. If you don’t get one, please call the NAR at (800) 852-0518. Do not tamper with your card; tampering might jeopardize your status on the NAR.
