If you want to become a nursing assistant, you must first gain the needed education and training. According to the state rules, all aspiring nursing assistants must enroll in a training program that has been authorized by the state registry before they may apply for the CNA competency exams. Depending on the program you choose to enroll in, you can complete your training in a matter of 2 to 6 months.

The state of Illinois currently requires you to have at least 40 hours of clinical experience in a health care environment before you can take the license examination.This is to ensure that you will be eligible to apply for the exams afterwards.

The competency exams for this state are handled by different institutions. Many of the training facilities that offer nursing assistant programs are also authorized to conduct the state’s competency exam. These exams are composed of a written and a skills evaluation. You have to pass all the exams to get your name entered in the registry. Only those whose names are entered in the registry will be allowed to work in a healthcare facility.  License holders may also work in the state by applying first for reciprocity. When they apply, the applicants should have a valid license and a good relationship with their state since they will be required to undergo criminal background checks. If you have worked anytime within two consecutive years, then your license will not expire.
