To become a nursing assistant in the state of North Carolina, you will have to apply for the license exams once you establish your eligibility. The exams are available for those who completed state-approved CNA training programs and nursing graduates. Since the state does not offer reciprocity, certified nursing assistants from other states must undergo retraining and retesting.
As of December 2012, Person VUE launched their online scheduling system. The new system has created several changes when it comes to the application process for the license exams. The following changes to the application process can be found on the list below:
• The paper application process has been removed
• All applications for the Nurse Aide I exams are to be done and processed online.
• The applicants are now the ones who will schedule their own exams.
• All applicants will now be required to have a working email address.
• The new registration system now accepts payment in the form of credit/debit/bank cards.
When scheduling for an exam, you will have the option to take the exam at either a regional testing site or at your own training facility. For those who are applying to do in-facility testing, please make sure that your training facility is allowed by Pearson VUE to conduct the exams. Instructions on how to schedule at either sites can be downloaded from this link: http://www.pearsonvue.com/nc/nurseaides/schedule/.
To gain entry into the NCNAR, you will need to pass both the written/oral exam and the skills demonstration. The results of the exams are often within 10 minutes after they are sent for scoring. If they are not released on the same day, they will mail you the results within a week. If you passed, your name will also be automatically entered into the Registry. Every applicant is given three attempts to pass all exams. If you fail after the third attempt, you will be required to redo your training before you are allowed to reapply for the exams.
