The goal of the Nursing Home Reform Act is to provide better nursing care to the patients in different healthcare settings. To help meet this goal, all nursing aides are now required to be properly trained and certified in order to work in a state-approved healthcare facility. This means that aspiring nursing aides must now enroll in an approved training program and take on a certification exam before they can start working as full-fledged nursing aides.
Unlike many states, CNA training in California takes 150 hours to complete. These hours are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. Each program is required to be headed by a licensed nurse with at least 2 years of nursing experience and has completed a continuing education on planning, implementing, and evaluating a nursing program.
Before the students are allowed to enter the clinical portion of the training they must first get fingerprinted through the Live Scan Services. A copy of the completed request form must be sent to the ACTS. Students are also required to spend at least 16 hours learning the following topics before taking care of patients:
• Medical and Surgical Asepsis
• Safety Precautions
• Emergency Care
• Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• Respecting the Patient’s Rights
• Promoting the Patient’s Independence
Upon completing the program, which can take from about 8 to 24 months, the aspirant can now apply for the certification exam, which is properly known as the Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam or NNAAP exam. Aspirants must send the Initial Application forms to the ATCS before sending their application forms for the NNAAP exam to their Regional Testing Center.
The NNAAP exam in this state consists of a written/oral test and a practical skills test. Both of these are taken on the same day at an approved testing center. Aspirants must pass both tests within 2 years after completing the training program to get certified. If an applicant fails he is given another 2 attempts to pass. Failing for the third attempt means a mandatory recompletion of an approved CNA program.
Those who will pass both tests will receive a certificate from the ATCS. Employers will always verify every applicant’s certification before hiring. They can do this by either calling (916) 327-2445 or by going online and visiting http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx.
