It is very important that when you take care of patients in a nursing home as a nurse aide, you should know what you are doing. It is top priority that the patient’s receive only the best quality care that can be given. To help with this goal, the NNAAP examination was developed. This exam will test aspiring nurse aides in terms of both knowledge and skills needed to properly function as a certified nurse aide.
The exams consist of a written exam, which can also be offered orally, and a clinical skills evaluation. The aspiring nurse aides will take all the required tests on the same day, only at approved testing sites. For those who are not currently enrolled in a nursing home or is employed in a nursing facility should take the exams at a regional testing site. A training facility may conduct the exams by applying for in-facility testing.
To help you prepare for the exams, you should enroll in a state-approved training program. When you enroll, you will be spending 75 hours in lectures, laboratory works, and in an actual clinical area taking care of the patients.
If you are a nurse aide that is registered in a different state and wants to work in North Carolina, you are still required to take the NNAAP exam since N.C. does not offer reciprocity. Nurse aides from other states are allowed to take the test without undergoing additional training. For those individuals who wish to refresh their skills and knowledge before taking the exams, they may enroll in a refresher course at a local community college (http://www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/).
Once you have your CNA certificate, you will be allowed to work in a nursing home so long as your license is active. A license is considered expired if the owner of the license failed to get qualified work within the last 24 months. For work to be considered qualified, the nurse aide must work for at least 8 hours with pay, doing nurse aide approved tasks, while under the supervision of a registered nurse.
