It is the NC Nurse Aide I Registry is the federally mandated registry for nursing aides. Anyone who is working as a nursing aide in the state of North Carolina is required to be on the Registry. This also includes RNs, LPNs, Nurse Aide IIs, and Medication Aides.
Since the state does not offer reciprocity to nursing aides from other states, the only way to become a nursing aide in NC is to apply and take the NNAAP exams. To help prepare you to pass the exam, it is highly recommended that nursing aide candidates enroll in a training program. The training programs in the state are required to offer at total of 75 hours of training, which are divided into lectures and clinical duties. The students will be learning concepts such as basic care, infection control, mental health, rehabilitation, patient’s rights and independence, and emergency procedures.
The state does not have a minimum age requirement to become a nursing assistant. Through the Health Occupations Education programs, approved high schools can offer the standardized nursing assistant training program to their students. For more information about nursing assistant high school training programs, you can contact the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) at (919) 807-3907.
After completing the program, the next step is to apply for the license exams. The license exams for this state are handled by Pearson VUE. With their new system, the nursing aide candidates are now able to apply and schedule the exams online. To do this, all they have to do is to follow this link: http://www.pearsonvue.com/nc/nurseaides/schedule/.
The exams will test both the skills and knowledge of the nursing aide candidate. In order to gain entry into the Registry, they must be able to pass both tests. The results are released 10 minutes after they are sent for scoring. In some cases they results are not released within the same day due to technical difficulties. The name of the candidate will added automatically to the Registry once he has passed.
