A nursing assistant is one of the most in demand healthcare occupations in California. They can be found providing nursing-related care to patients in different healthcare settings like long-term care centers, hospitals, elder-care homes, assisted living centers, rehabilitation centers, clinics, and even in the patient’s own residence. Training to become a nursing assistant is one of the best ways to start a career in healthcare.
Since nursing assistants work very closely with the patients, it is important that all aspiring nursing assistants learn how to properly provide each patient with their individual needs. That is why all aspirants are required to complete a state-approved training program. The best way to become a nursing assistant is to learn from a state-approved training course.
Before you enroll in a training class, you have to make sure that the program has the approval of the state’s ATCS. This is the body that is in charge of approving all training program in the state. State-approved courses offer a minimum of 150 hours. Their curriculums consist of 50 hours of classroom training and supervised practical training in an actual clinical setting. Students are placed under the care of qualified instructors and are not allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been taken up in the classroom. Some online courses are available. However, you will only be allowed to take 24 hours of instruction online and the remainder must be held in a offline facility. This way you will receive the hands-on skills practice necessary for the job.
As a nursing aide student, you will learn a wide array of topics ranging from infection control, mental health, communication techniques, emergency procedures, assisting patients with their daily activities, as well as other concepts in the fundamentals of nursing. When you have gained enough skills, you will then be brought to a clinical area to practice. While there, you will be under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Depending on the training course, it can take 8 to 24 months to complete your training. As soon as you are through, you can then submit your application for the certification exam. Challenging the certification exam is the final step in becoming a nursing assistant. Employers will only hire nursing assistants who have a state-issued CNA certification.
After you complete an instruction course you are given up to two years to pass the certification exams. A test date can be scheduled by your school administrator or you can call the California Department of Public Health at (916) 327-2445 to help you find the nearest test location.
