To be able to provide direct nursing care to the residents in a South Carolina Medicaid-certified health care facility as a CNA, a person must be listed on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. The SCNAR is a listing of all the individuals who were able to meet the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. Part of the NAR is the Abuse Registry. CNAs who are on this list have committed abuse, neglect, or have stolen from the residents. Once placed on the Abuse Registry, a nurse aide can no longer work in a Medicaid-certified healthcare facility.
If you have never been certified before as a nursing assistant, then you will need to take on both the written (oral) exam and the clinical skills return demonstration of the NNAAP exams. Passing the NNAAP exams is the only way for you to be entered into the SCNAR.
Before you can take on the exams, you will need to complete a 100-hour training program that’s approved by the state’s Department of Health and Human Service. Many of the facilities that offer the programs require their students to be:
• At least 18 years old
• Be able to read and write English
• Possess a high school diploma or a general education degree
• Complete of immunizations
• Able to pass the TB test
• Able to pass the criminal background checks, which is done in both federal and state.
If you already have taken a training program that was offered in another state but have not yet taken the NNAAP exam, you may apply directly to take the exams in this state without the need for retraining, provided that the program you took is also equivalent to 100 hours and meets both state and federal standards.
The NAR in South Carolina is currently run by Pearson VUE. This testing company was contracted by the SCDHHS to develop, score, and releases the results of the exam. If you pass all the tests, they will be the ones who will send your CNA card.
Your nurse aide certification is valid for 2 years. A notice is sent by Pearson VUE to your address at least 2 months before your certification expires. To be eligible for renewal, you must find work as a paid nursing assistant for 8 hours. If the notice fails to arrive at your address, you can download a copy of the renewal forms at www.pearsonvue.com.
