A CNA certification is a requirement to work as a nursing assistant in any healthcare setting in Pennsylvania. One can get certified by applying for a place on the Pennsylvania State Nurse Aide Registry. Those who have never been certified as nursing assistants must take and pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam or NNAAP exam to get on the NAR.

college-student-friendsThere are a few requirements that must be completed before you can take on the state nursing assistant license examination. First of all, you must be at least 16 years old to be able to enroll in a nurse aide training program. You must also undergo physical exams to determine that you are capable of taking care of the patients. You will also have to undergo a background check to determine if you have any criminal records that might disqualify you from taking the exam.

The state’s NNAAP exams are scheduled and conducted by the American Red Cross with the help of Pearson VUE. The exams consist of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random practical skills exam. A candidate must pass both tests to get on the NAR. Before a candidate can take the exams, he/she must establish eligibility by successfully completing a Department of Education certified training program.

CNA programs are offered by hospitals, nursing homes, community colleges, and other training institutions. Training fees may cost from around $350 to $1000, which would already include the costs for books, uniforms, and other necessary materials. If you have financial problems, there are several training facilities and programs that offer special grants; one of these programs is the American Red Cross CNA training course.

The ARC course is a 4-week training that’s approved by the Department of Education. Their training, like all others, consists of supervised clinical practice and classroom lectures. Students, while in the clinical area, shall be divided into smaller groups with 10 students each, and placed under the supervision of a CNA instructor. No student is allowed to perform any procedure without the knowledge or presence of their instructor. Smaller groupings allow instructors to better supervise the students, as well as promote maximum learning potential for the students.

There are two types of nursing assistant Instructors – primary and assistant. Primary instructors are registered nurses with 2 years of experience, where one of those years was spent working in a long-term care facility providing nursing services. Assistant instructors may either be registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. Assistant instructors are allowed to teach only 49% of the total training hours; the majority must be done by the Primary instructors.

After you complete your training, you can get the application forms by calling the ARC at (800) 795-2350 or by visiting www.pearsonvue.com. Application forms must be sent along with the payment of $102 for the testing fees. Payments are required to be in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check. Cash, personal checks, or credit cards are not accepted. Incomplete applications will not be processed by the ARC.

Each test applicant receives three attempts to pass the exams. Those who are successful are then included on the state registry for nurse aides and become eligible to work for two years. You can learn more about the CNA registry requirements by calling Pearson VUE at 1-800-852-0518.
