Acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills is the first step in becoming a nursing aide in California. When searching for a certified nursing aide training program to enroll in, make sure to only enroll in a program that is certified by the California Department of Public Health. Many of the training facilities will only accept students who are:
• At least 18 years old
• Physically and mentally healthy
• Free of any criminal records that prevents him or her from getting certified by the ATCS
• High school graduates or who possess a GED
• Complete in all required immunizations
CNA programs in California consist of both classroom instructions and practical training. Programs are required by the CDPH to provide their students with at least 150 hours of training. At the end of the program, the students will learn different nursing concepts involving nutrition, death and dying, personal care, infection control, mental health, vital signs, and safety and emergency procedures.
Before students are allowed to go to the clinical area, they must first be fingerprinted and request for Live Scan Services. This is for the mandatory background checks. Training facilities are required by the State to pay for the Live Scan. If you have any complaints regarding a training facility, please contact your nearest CDPH Licensing & Certification District Office. You can see their information by following this link: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/facilities/Pages/LCDistrictOffices.aspx. It is the Aide and Technician Certification Section that is in charge of approving training program. You can call them at (916) 327-2445 or reach them via email at cna@cdph.ca.gov to learn more about how you can qualify.
After you attend your instruction you will want to schedule a time to pass the exams. Your school administrator can help you find a testing location near you. The competency exam will have a written and a skills demonstration part. You have to pass both of them to get your license. Once certified you allowed to work for up to two years before you need to renew your credentials.
Once you have applied for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam you will receive a testing date. This exam will determine if you are competent to work in a certified health care facility as a CNA. This exam will test your knowledge and skill. If you pass all the tests, you will get your nurse aide certificate from the Aide and Technician Certification Section. You can get the application packet from your instructor or download it at http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf.
According to federal and state law, only certified nursing aides are allowed to work in a certified nursing facility. Another way of getting certified in California is by applying for reciprocity. Only CNAs who are listed in another state’s Nurse Aide Registry are allowed to apply. Applicants must have a current certification and a clean record when applying. If they have been certified for more than 2 years, they must provide proof of employment as a nursing assistant within the last 2 years.
