The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to complete a training program that is approved by the state. Once you finish the program with the minimum set of hours (currently 75) that is required by the state, you are then eligible to take the nursing assistant license exams.
It is not mandatory to take a training classes in order to qualify for the exams. Those who wish can challenge the exams directly if they feel they have the knowledge to do so. Pearson Vue conducts the testing and can be reached to answer any questions you have about reservations or requirements at 1-800-274-0504.
After passing the exams you are deemed certified and can work in long-term care facilities throughout the state. Your standing in the state registry is valid for a period of 2 years. You must renew it each 2 year period by showing verification or time spent working at the job. Your employer can help fill out the information to prove your work. To determine your current status or find out the time remaining before your renewal date you can call (651) 215-8705.
Because of the increasing demand for nursing assistants, there are even nurses now who want to become trainers. If you are a nurse and want to take advantage of the job opportunities brought about the increase in the demand for nursing assistants, you can opt to become a instructor.
For a training program to be approved by the Registry, it must meet a set of requirements. Part of those requirements is that it must have qualified instructors ready upon apply for approval. The law requires that all NA instructors must be licensed nurses.
To be qualified to become an instructor, one must have a minimum of 2 years of working experience as a nurse in the country where at least one of those years must be in a long term care facility. One should also have a Train the Trainer certificate, which can be acquired by completing a training program at Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
