If you are applying to become a nursing assistant using route 1, 3, 5, 6, or 7, you will be required to take the competency exams of the state, which are conducted by Prometric. The exams consist of either an written or oral exam, and a skills evaluation on the basic nursing skills.
These exams are only to be taken at approved testing sites. These sites may either be a regional testing site or a training facility. For those who are taking the exams at their training facilities, please make sure that the facility is approved by Prometric to conduct in-facility testing. If it isn’t, the facility must apply for approval before they are allowed to give the tests. Facilities can download a copy of the In-Facility Testing application form by following this link: https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/New%20York/NYNARequestforInFacilityTesting20111104.pdf.
If a candidate will not be able to take the exams on the scheduled date, the training facility is required to inform Prometric no less than 5 business days before exam date. If they are able to do so, the candidate will be given another scheduled exam date without any additional fees. All exam fees for a candidate who is not able to take the exam will be forfeited if no proper notice was given.
If the individual is taking the exams at a regional testing site, the candidate will have to inform Prometric himself. The notice must also be done at least 5 days before the scheduled examination date. If he misses the exams because of tardiness, he will no longer be allowed to do the exam and the fees are all forfeited.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Prometric will provide an individual who has certain disabilities the considerations needed when taking the exams. The individual will have to request for the accommodations on the same date that he/she applied for the exam.
