The state does not allow any nursing assistant to work in a healthcare facility if he or she is not in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. The only way for you to be entered there is if you are able to pass the state’s CNA license exams which are only available to those who are able to meet the different requirements of the state.
Among them, the two most important are the completions of a nurse aide training program that is approved by the state and being able to pass the federal and state background checks. Without these you will not be able to proceed and take the exams. Approved courses provide the necessary amount of instruction which is currently set at a total of 75 hours of class time. Included in your instruction there needs to be 30 hours devoted to hands-on fundamental skills needed for the job that is taught in a nursing facility setting. In addition you will need to apply for and pass the state exams.
Nursing assistant license holders from other states are welcome to apply for reciprocity if they want to work in the state. When they apply, they have to make sure that they have a good relationship with the state they come from since they will also be subjected to the background checks. The most important thing that they must have during their application is a valid license. All those who are applying for reciprocity are also required to pass the background checks. You can speak with a customer representative of the Iowa Direct Care Worker Registry by calling 515-281-4077 or 1-866-876-1997 to learn more about current qualifications and requirements.
