To be a nursing aide in Minnesota you must first enroll in CNA classes that will teach you the fundamental skills required on the job. You will have to meet the minimum set of hours that is required by the state to finish the program (currently 75 hours minimum instruction). Once you finish the program, you will be eligible to apply for the state exams.
To become a certified nursing assistant, you must take on the competency exams in order to get your name into the state’s Nursing Assistant Registry. To help you prepare for the exams, you can enroll in a state-approved training program. The federal government has outlined the specifics for training as well as for testing. These programs are using either the curriculum approved by the American Red Cross or by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
The competency exams are handled by Pearson Vue, their exams are composed of two parts. One is the written exams and the other is the return demonstration of the nursing competency skills. There is a handbook that you can study which you can download at http://www.asisvcs.com/indhome_fs.asp?CPCAT=0624NURSE. These handbooks contain the overview of the tests, including some sample questions and the list of the nursing skills that may come out during the exams.
If you want to have a duplicate of your certification, you will need to contact Pearson Vue at 1-800-274-0504. You will only be able to ask for a duplicate if you requested it within 24 months from the time you took the test.
Those with an active certification who reside in another state and wish to work in MN, may apply for reciprocity. This requires the applicant to send in Interstate Endorsement Forms in order to transfer their license. They will need to meet state guidelines and have an active certification and good standing with the state they come form to qualify. Call the Minnesota Department of Health at their phone support line: 651-215-8705, or email them at health.FPC-NAR@state.mn.us for more details.
