You must become certified in order to work as a nursing assistant in Tennessee. To meet the requirements you will first need to enroll in a state recommended training program and take the competency exams. Training programs must offer 75 hours of instruction conducted by an experienced registered nurse. During your classroom and clinical CNA class instruction you will learn infection control, safety procedures, CPR, Heimlich maneuver, emergency preparedness, resident independence, patient rights, communication and interpersonal skills.

After finishing your training you can apply for the license exams. The exams will test you on 5 of the 25 nursing related skills you learned during your training course. You must pass all 5 skills successfully to be listed on the state nurse aide registry. Certification on the registry is valid for 24 months and an idividual is recertified by showing proof that you worked one 8 hour shift during that time.
