The state requires aspiring nursing aides to complete a course that is approved by the state’s Board of Nursing and challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program. The NNAAP exam is only available to persons who have met the federal and state’s training requirements.

Certified Nursing Aide Training

Nurse aide training in Virginia takes at least 75 hours to complete. As a student you will be spending most of your time in the classroom for your lectures and in the clinical area for your practical training. Both the theory and practical training are conducted at the same time. You will be taught about infection control, proper documentation, patients’ rights, body mechanics, vital signs, basic nursing procedures, personal care, and many more.
You can find a suitable training program offered through the following:

•    Hospitals
•    Community Colleges
•    Nursing Homes
•    Red Cross Organization
•    Vocational Schools
•    Technical Colleges
•    Rehabilitation Centers
•    Long-term Care Facilities
•    Assisted Living Centers
•    Clinics
•    Certain Websites

Other Ways of Receiving Training

Nursing students and graduates are allowed to apply for the exam without the need to complete a course. The state will also allow nursing aide candidates who completed their training in another state to apply and take the NNAAP exam, just as long as the program they enrolled in is approved by their state’s proper authorities.

Applying for the NNAAP Exam

Instructors usually provide their students at the end of their training with the necessary application packets and instructions. If you do not have an application packet you can download one from this link: http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/075301.pdf. Please complete the forms before sending them. You must also indicate if you need any special accommodations when taking the exam.

Taking the NNAAP Exam

The NNAAP exam is a two part examination. You will be given 2 hours to answer all the multiple-choice questions on the written/oral test and 30 minutes to complete all required 5 nursing tasks. To get into the NAR you must pass both these tests within 2 years from the first time you took the NNAAP exam. If you fail to do this, then you will be required to complete another CNA program before you can reapply once more.
