If you want to be a nursing assistant in Ohio, then you must first enroll in a state-approved training program. Looking for a program to enroll in can sometimes be a confusing and difficult task. By enrolling in a well-known school or training program, you will also expect higher training fees. You do not need to worry so much though since the state has already prepared for this.

nurse-practice-on-simulatorTo ensure that the quality of training that the student’s will receive, training facilities that want to offer STNA training must undergo certification. By requiring the training facilities to undergo certification, the facilities will have to follow certain standards such as the number of training hours and the types of lessons that they must teach the students. According to Federal Law, training programs must offer no less than 75 hours of training. For this state, those 75 hours are divided into 16 hours of lectures and 59 hours of on-the-job training. Full-courses normally take 5 to 8 weeks to complete. There is also a 2-week refresher course that those with previous medical background and experience can enroll in.

A CNA, or in the case of Ohio – State-tested nurse aide, basically helps the registered nurse take care of the patients with their basic and routine needs. These routines may include, but are not limited to, performing bed baths, feeding the patients with use of tubes, helping the patient ambulate, dressing them, and assisting in daily activities. The students will also be trained in how to maintain the patient’s safety and perform emergency procedures like CPR when needed.

When you become a state-tested nurse aide, you can take advance certifications that you can place on top of your nursing assistant certification. You can opt to become a medication aide or a geriatric aide. These training will allow you to perform certain procedures that a nursing assistant cannot. Keep in mind that these advance certifications will require some additional training and testing.

With Toledo being the county seat of Lucas County and being the 4th most populous city     in the state, it is the best place for you to start your training. According to the last census that was done (2011), the total population of the city was estimated to be around 286,038.  You can find this city in the northwest region of the state, just on the western edge of Lake Eire. Its location being near the border of the State of Michigan, a number of healthcare facilities can be located in the area.  These facilities include Parkway Surgery Center, Certified Nurse Midwives, Intrater Roseline, Toledo Clinic, Cullen Center, Great Expressions Orthodontic, and many more. photo attribution: leonardodasilva
