The first thing that one should do is to enroll in a training program that is approved by the Department of Public Health. If they fail to pass the certification exam within 2 years after training, they will be required to complete another 150-hour CNA program.

The cost of the exam is $90; those who request to take an oral exam for the knowledge test must pay an additional $15. These payments must be sent along with the application forms in the form of money orders, cashier’s checks, or company checks.  Personal checks or cash is not accepted.

If a candidate is able to pass the certification exam, his or her name will be added to the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. The NAR contains the names of all those who have met the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. Those who are in the NAR will also receive nurse aide certificate from the ATCS.

Those who are already certified as nursing aides in another state and are seeking to work in California must first apply for reciprocity before they can work in a state-approved healthcare facility. Applicants must be currently certified and are able to maintain a good relationship with their state. They will be required to undergo the federal and state criminal background checks, and provide proof of training and education upon application.
