For those who are considering starting a career in healthcare, they should think about becoming a nursing assistant in California. The demand for nursing assistants in the state is very high and is continually increasing. Training to become a certified nursing assistant is one of the best ways to start a career in the field of medicine.
The first thing that one should do is to enroll in a training program that is approved by the Department of Public Health. Enrolling in a CDPH-approved program will ensure that you will receive proper training and education. This will also guarantee the students that they will be able to apply for the certification exam once they complete their training.
CNA training consists of both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Students are handled by qualified instructors and are taught important concepts and skills. Training programs will provide students with the knowledge and skills that they will need to meet the patients’ individual needs. Most training programs in California can be completed within 8 to 24 weeks of training.
After completing an approved program, an applicant can now submit his application for the certification exam. Applications for the certification exam are submitted to the Regional Testing Center in their area. Since their training will only be valid for 24 months after completing their training program, they will have that amount of time to get certified. If they fail to pass the certification exam within 2 years after training, they will be required to complete another 150-hour CNA program.
The certification exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a clinical skills demonstration. Candidates are required to pass both tests in order to get certified. The cost of the exam is $90; those who request to take an oral exam for the knowledge test must pay an additional $15. These payments must be sent along with the application forms in the form of money orders, cashier’s checks, or company checks. Personal checks or cash is not accepted.
If a candidate is able to pass the certification exam, his or her name will be added to the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. The NAR contains the names of all those who have met the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. Those who are in the NAR will also receive nurse aide certificate from the ATCS.
Those who are already certified as nursing aides in another state and are seeking to work in California must first apply for reciprocity before they can work in a state-approved healthcare facility. Applicants must be currently certified and are able to maintain a good relationship with their state. They will be required to undergo the federal and state criminal background checks, and provide proof of training and education upon application.
