There are different ways that you can take on the path of becoming a nurse aide. People with different educational attainments can become one if they know what to do. You can complete a 150-hour CDPH-approved NATP, gain military education as a medic, or attend/complete a nursing education program.

Following any of those 3 routes will make you eligible to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination or the NNAAP exam. This exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills evaluation. Passing all the tests will get you certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section. According to the Nursing Home Reform Act, which is now part of the OBRA of ’87, all nurse aides must be certified to work in a state-approved nursing facility or a long-term care center.

Applicants will be asked to provide proof of education and training, as well as pass the national background check for criminal records. Applicants who have been certified for more than 2 years are required to provide proof of employment as a nurse aide within the last 2 years.
