The Nursing Home Reform Act was created to improve the quality of care that is received by patients in different health care institutions. Aspiring nursing aides are now required to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program to determine if they are competent to work as a CNA. The NNAAP exams will test both the knowledge and skill of CNA candidates.
To help you prepare of the exams, you must attend and complete a 100-hour training nursing aide training program that is approved by the SCDHHS. Your training will consist of classroom instructions and practical training. You will be guided by qualified nursing aide instructors, which are registered nurses who have sufficient nursing experience in their field, as well as supervising CNA students and training adults.
Completing an approved nursing aide training program will make you eligible to apply for the NNAAP exams. Nursing graduates or LPNs may also apply directly for the exams without any need for additional training. Before sending in their applications, they must first send a copy of their transcripts to scnar@scdhhs.gov for review.
To get into the Nurse Aide Registry, you must pass both the knowledge test and the skills evaluation. Each candidate will only be given a maximum of 3 attempts to pass. If you still fail after your 3rd attempt, you will be required to attend another 100-hour program before you can reapply. Candidates are allowed to reapply for the exams after 45 days.
Unlike other states, CNA certifications in this state remain valid for only 2 years and must be renewed before it expires. The Registry will send out a Notice at least 60 days before your certification expires. This notice will come with the renewal forms. If you do not receive the Notice, you can get a copy at http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074103.pdf.
One of the requirements for renewal is that you must have worked for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing aide. A lapsed certification will result in its expiration. No nursing aide is allowed to work with an expired certification. For more information, you can visit the SCDHHS website at www.scdhhs.gov or the Pearson VUE website at www.pearsonvue.com.
